NEW DELHI: Terming the misuse of provisions of dowry harassment by women as “legal terrorism”, a trial court has slammed such women who, in a bid to settle scores, drag all family members into a dowry harassment case though they may be “totally unconnected” with the case.
“The provisions of Section 498A are not a law to take revenge, seek recovery of dowry or to force a divorce but a penal provision to punish the wrongdoers. The victims (women) are often misguided into exaggerating the facts by adding those persons as accused who are unconnected with the harassment under a mistaken belief that by doing so they are making a strong case,” additional sessions judge Kamini Lau said.

MANGALORE: The JMFC Court in Mangalore has issued Non-bailable arrest warrant against a woman doctor, hailing from Davangere and her father for submitting a police complaint of alleged dowry charges against her husband and in-laws.
According to Advocate PP Hegde, Dr. Ranjeetha Shenoy of Davanagere was married to Dr. Gurukanth Rao, assistant professor of Medicine at KMC Manipal. Could this actually have contributed to the high number of married men who take their own lives? According to the recent National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) report, the number of married men committing suicide is actually higher than that of married women. While, women ending their lives due to marital harassment, is well played out in the media, and by several NGO voices, the marginally higher number of married men who have taken their lives is seldom heard. The NCRB report has it that 70.8% of the suicide victims are married males while 66.6% are married females.
